Too often, the physical and behavioral changes associated with chronic pain are simply written off as “old age”. We here at Mockingbird believe that our pets deserve the right to age gracefully and with dignity; this means keeping them as comfortable as possible for as long as possible.
During our pain management consultation, we will work with you and your pet to identify the causes of his or her pain, and to assess the degree of pain. We’ll help you understand the difference between adaptive, or “normal” pain, and the maladaptive pain that can develop over time as a response to inadequately managed chronic pain.
The most progressive, effective pain management takes a “multimodal” approach–this means that we try to interrupt pain pathways in as many places as possible. We’ll work with your and your primary care veterinarian to develop an individualized treatment plan that works for your pet; this will likely include pharmaceuticals, acupuncture, and/or herbs. When appropriate, we will also refer you to practitioners who offer other services (massage, physical therapy, etc.) that we feel may benefit your pet. Regular follow-up visits will allow us to tailor these treatments to your pet’s needs and keep him or her comfortable to ensure the best possible quality of life.
We’ve seen so many pets benefit from an effective pain management plan–if you have questions about what you’re seeing with your pet, or would like to make an appointment, please don’t hesitate to contact us!
