The Mockingbird Mission:

To honor the human-animal bond by caring for pets and their people.
About Dr. Jen...

Dr. Jennifer Douthwaite is the founder and primary veterinarian of Mockingbird Veterinary Housecalls. Jen was born in New Orleans and grew up in the northeast, then received her B.A. in Anthropology from Wesleyan University in Connecticut. She took a long and winding route to veterinary school, with experiences that included fieldwork on a tiny island inhabited by 10,000 birds; working at the Louisiana SPCA and weathering Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath in her beloved hometown; and spending a year in the Kenyan bush with a troop of 85 baboons. She is so grateful to all of her adventures for deepening her understanding of humanity and the human-animal bond.

Jen graduated from veterinary school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and in 2015, started Mockingbird Veterinary Housecalls in an effort to expand the availability of in-home end-of-life services for pets in Nashville and surrounding areas. Her desire to walk with families on their pet's end-of-life journey has been strongly influenced by her background in anthropology, as well as her time in New Orleans.

Jen lives in a wonderfully old, creaky house in Old Hickory Village with her partner, Mike Greenberg, who is also a vet. They share their home with a beloved menagerie: Atticus, their wise, bearded pup; Frank, their sleepy Boston Terrier; Greta, their muppet mix, and Peep, their one-eyed cat.

Our philosophy:

We believe that an open mind, a warm heart, and the ability to listen are the cornerstones of practicing good medicine.

We believe in the power of providing education, guidance and support to families in choosing treatment plans and making decisions that feel right for them and their pets.

We believe that good patient care involves teamwork. We are excited to partner with primary care veterinarians, integrative medicine practitioners, counselors, chaplains, and more to provide true holistic care to each pet and his or her family.

We believe that each pet’s passing should be a gentle, dignified, reverent experience, and we seek to help families find space to celebrate their pet’s life in the midst of their grief.

We believe that every dog and cat deserves a warm place to sleep and a person to call home.

We believe in giving back to the community we love : we are proud volunteers locally with Pet Community Center, and internationally with Animal Balance. Please join us in lending your support to these organizations!
